Headway™Product Code (REF): MC212156S
The Headway™ microcatheter family is the standard delivery platform for the full range of MicroVention neuroendovascular devices. Each model in the family is designed around a specific diameter range of devices and a corresponding lumen size: Headway DUO (0.0165 in lumen) delivers Cosmos and HydroSoft coils and PHIL liquid embolic through a single-marker variant, or serves as a dedicated PHIL delivery catheter through a dual-marker variant optimized for liquid embolic flow control; Headway 17 Advanced (0.017 in) is the workhorse coil delivery microcatheter for the majority of aneurysm procedures; Headway 21 (0.021 in) handles LVIS and LVIS Jr stents and FRED Jr flow diverters; Headway 27 (0.027 in) delivers the full FRED and FRED X system. All Headway models share a braided shaft construction that provides pushability, kink resistance, and consistent torque response through tortuous intracranial anatomy. Four tip shapes — straight, 45°, 90°, and J — allow operators to select the entry angle best matched to the aneurysm neck orientation without reshaping the catheter under fluoroscopy. The Advanced Soft and Advanced variants of Headway 17 differ in shaft stiffness, with Soft preferred for more tortuous anatomy where catheter whip and vessel straightening must be minimized. Headway 17 Advanced is available in 150 cm working length; Headway 21 and 27 in 156 cm. All are compatible with standard 0.014 in neurovascular guidewires, including the Traxcess family.

Request DocumentationFrequently Asked Questions
- What is the Headway™ microcatheter family and what does each model deliver?
- Headway DUO (0.0165 in lumen): coil embolization and PHIL liquid embolic delivery. Headway 17 Advanced (0.017 in): the standard workhorse coil delivery microcatheter for the majority of aneurysm procedures. Headway 21 (0.021 in): LVIS, LVIS Jr, LVIS EVO, and FRED Jr delivery. Headway 27 (0.027 in): FRED and FRED X flow diverter delivery. All accept standard 0.014 in guidewires.
- What catalog number do I need for standard aneurysm coiling with Headway?
- For standard coiling with Cosmos, HydroSoft, or HydroFrame coils, use Headway 17 Advanced Soft (MC172150S, straight tip) or the pre-shaped variants: 45° (MC17215045X), 90° (MC17215090X), or J (MC172150JX). All are 150 cm working length. Headway DUO (MC162156S) is used when simultaneous PHIL delivery is planned alongside coiling.
- What is the difference between Headway 17 Advanced Soft and Headway 17 Advanced?
- Headway 17 Advanced Soft (MC172150S) has a more flexible distal shaft for tortuous anatomy where catheter whip and vessel straightening must be minimized. Headway 17 Advanced (MC172150SX) is slightly stiffer, offering better pushability in less tortuous anatomy. Both have identical inner diameters, lengths, and tip shapes; the choice is anatomy-dependent.
- What guidewires are compatible with Headway™ microcatheters?
- All Headway models accept standard 0.014 in neurovascular guidewires, including MicroVention Traxcess guidewires.
